Leaders of Digital Transformation final

A heat network that routes itself.

For the Moscow Mayor’s Leaders of Digital Transformation contest we built a service that routes new buildings to the heat network on its own: it avoids obstacles, sizes the pipes and prices the work. With it we reached the final of the Moscow IT Department task and came within a hair of the prize places.

3D map of the result: 17 of 17 buildings connected, 1.846 km of new network, 273.6 million roubles to build

The final on 30 October, Lomonosov cluster.

The Moscow Mayor’s contest brings together IT teams from across the country. Our task came from the Moscow IT Department: a service that models how new buildings connect to heat networks. We passed the selection and defended the solution in the final before the city’s experts.

Four tie-ins to the existing network, shared mains and 14 new chambers. The best variant found.

S = 0.7 × C / 25 M ₽ + 0.3 × L / 100 m; the lower, the better the variant.

  1. ReadingGeoJSON is read as a stream and turned into metres.
  2. ObstaclesBuildings, water and the railway grow by the clearances in the task.
  3. RoutingA visibility graph and A* search: turns of 90° at most, each step priced by its share of S.
  4. Shared networkA building joins the existing network or a new branch, and pipe sizes are recalculated.
  5. ResultTwo variants ranked by S, GeoJSON and a map with explanations.

17 of 17

Every building is connected in the main mode, following the organisers’ additional clarifications.

64% along the blocks

Routes follow the axes of the buildings. In the first submission 53% of the length did.

2 minutes, not 16

The run with OpenStreetMap roads became faster and no longer crashes.

A validator and a separate auditor check the geometry, cost and format of the result.

Java 11 and Spring Boot, a job queue, PostgreSQL and Swagger, started with one Docker command. The result map, built with React, TypeScript and MapLibre, shows variants, chambers and pipe sizes, in 3D as well.

The service’s technical interface: GeoJSON upload, two variants and the new network on the district map
